Heart of the Hill Country: October Events You Won’t Want to Miss
Explore the vibrant culture, history, and natural beauty of Blanco, Fredericksburg, Dripping Springs, and beyond while attending some of the most unique events the Hill Country has to offer this fall.
Hill Country Events
Blanco
Ladies State Chili Championship of Texas
Oct. 4-5
Yett Memorial Park, 1813 US 281 South
The annual chili cookoff raises funds for charities, with this year’s proceeds benefiting the Pink Warrior Advocates. Besides the chili competition, there will be judging for beans, margaritas, barbecue chicken, pork ribs, and steak. Vendors will also be on-site with a variety of products. Don’t miss the additional cookoff, Just A Chili Cookoff, on Oct. 6.

Exploring Local History: The Roots of Blanco
Blanco, named after the Blanco River, is a town with rich historical significance dating back to the 1800s. Yett Memorial Park, where the Ladies State Chili Championship takes place, isn’t just an event location—it’s a piece of Blanco’s heritage. Built in memory of local families and pioneers, the park has become a hub for community events. When you visit for the chili cookoff, take a moment to reflect on the town’s past and how these traditions, like chili-making, have shaped its present.
While you’re there, don’t forget to check out the Old Blanco County Courthouse, which has been beautifully preserved and now serves as a visitor center. You can walk the grounds, explore the shops nearby, or grab a coffee at one of the local cafes, all while soaking in the charm of this historic small town.
Fredericksburg
Oktoberfest
Oct. 4-6
Marktplatz Pavilion, 100 W. Main St.
Fredericksburg’s beloved Oktoberfest brings a slice of Bavaria to the Hill Country. Enjoy three days of singing, dancing, toasting, and good old-fashioned gemütlichkeit (friendliness) at the 44th annual celebration. You’ll find authentic food, a waltz contest, artisans, a polka contest, and even dirndl and lederhosen competitions.
The Charm of Fredericksburg’s Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg is more than just beer and bratwurst—it’s a cultural celebration of the town’s deep German roots. Settled in the mid-1800s by German immigrants, Fredericksburg still holds onto its heritage through festivals like Oktoberfest, where you can immerse yourself in traditional music, dance, and food. One of the highlights of the event is the lively oompah bands, which fill the air with the sounds of Bavaria, making it impossible not to tap your feet or join in the dancing.
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit Fredericksburg’s Pioneer Museum, where you can learn about the early settlers and how they shaped this part of the Hill Country. Pair that with a visit to the National Museum of the Pacific War, a surprising gem located in this small town.
Dripping Springs
Lone Star Gourd Festival
Oct. 4-5
Ranch Park Event Center, 1042 Event Center Drive
A fun family event, the Lone Star Gourd Festival offers a free make-and-take station, demonstrations, classes, raffle tickets, and a silent auction. There’s also a juried competition showcasing some of the best gourd art around. Be sure to shop for unique, handmade holiday gifts at the vendor booths and explore the creative world of gourd artistry.
A Day at the Lone Star Gourd Festival
For those interested in arts and crafts, the Lone Star Gourd Festival in Dripping Springs offers a unique experience. Gourd art has a long history, dating back to Native American tribes who used gourds for everything from utensils to ceremonial objects. Today, the art form has evolved into intricate carvings, paintings, and sculptures. If you’re curious, the festival’s free make-and-take station is a great way to try your hand at decorating your own gourd.
Between demonstrations and shopping for handmade holiday gifts, take some time to explore the scenic beauty of Dripping Springs. Known as the “Gateway to the Hill Country,” the town offers plenty of outdoor activities like hiking and visiting local wineries and distilleries.
The Importance of Supporting Local Events
Each of these events represents more than just a fun day out—they’re an essential part of the community. From supporting artisans at the Gourd Festival to helping charities at the Chili Championship, your participation helps sustain the local culture and economy. The Hill Country thrives on its community-driven events, where neighbors come together to celebrate traditions, artistry, and the land they love. When you visit, you become part of that tapestry, contributing to the ongoing story of this remarkable region.

Watch Your Step: The Venomous Snakes of the Texas Hill Country

If you’ve ever hiked through the rugged trails of the Texas Hill Country or spent a quiet afternoon near a creek, you’ve probably wondered what creatures might be sharing the space with you. While the rolling hills and scenic views can steal the show, there’s one group of locals you should be mindful of—the venomous snakes that call this place home.
Now, don’t let that scare you off. Most of these slithering neighbors want nothing to do with us. In fact, they’re more interested in staying hidden. But it’s always good to know who’s who just in case you run into one on your adventures.
1. The Western Diamondback Rattlesnake
This is the celebrity of the snake world in these parts. With its signature rattling tail and bold diamond patterns, the Western Diamondback makes its presence known. They’re not out to get you, but if you hear that rattle, take it as a friendly warning to give them space.
2. The Copperhead
Copperheads are masters of disguise. With their reddish-brown, leaf-like patterns, they blend right into the wooded and rocky terrain. They’re more on the shy side, but stepping too close might get you an accidental bite.
3. The Cottonmouth (Water Moccasin)
If you’re exploring near water, this is the snake to keep an eye out for. The Cottonmouth gets its name from the white inside of its mouth, which it shows when it feels threatened. Give them plenty of room, especially around lakes and rivers.
4. The Texas Coral Snake
This one’s a bit harder to spot but packs a punch. The Texas Coral Snake sports vibrant red, yellow, and black bands. There’s an old rhyme that helps you remember if it’s dangerous: “Red touches yellow, kill a fellow; red touches black, venom lack.” But honestly, just avoid all brightly colored snakes, and you’ll be good to go!
Stay Safe, Stay Aware
While these snakes are a part of the natural beauty of the Hill Country, they’re not out to bother you unless you bother them. Stick to marked trails, watch your step, and you’ll be just fine. Remember, they’re an essential part of this ecosystem, helping control the rodent population and keeping the balance in check.
So next time you’re out hiking or lounging by the water, just keep an eye on your surroundings, and enjoy the wild beauty of the Texas Hill Country—snakes and all.
